The all-new Thunder Road Marathon unites the excitement of road racing, music, family-friendly entertainment and the Charlotte region's rich heritage of stock car racing.
From the time the green flag drops on race day until the checkered flag falls on the final finisher, you will experience the race of a lifetime while enjoying the sounds of music along one of the Southeast's most scenic courses.

The Thunder Road Marathon also features a Amica Insurance Half Marathon. Both courses are certified and will be the same as that of the Marathon Relay.

11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Thunder Road Marathon Expo at the Charlotte Convention Center
12:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Guest speakers and panelists will be announced as the event draws near.
Saturday, December 13
8:00 a.m. Marathon, Amica Insurance Half Marathon and Marathon Relay.
8:20 a.m. The Presbyterian Hospital 5K start.

Remember, there is NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION for any of the events.

Marathon Relay Information:

Three Person Teams – Amica Insurance Half Marathon, The Presbyterian Hospital 5K and 10 Mile legs...in that order.
Relay Points are located within walking distance of start and finish lines, so runners are responsible for their own transportation.
Relay Divisions: Open Men, Open Women and Mixed (must have at least one female)
Runners: Need a Partner for the Relay?
If you are interested in doing the relay, but don't have a partner yet, check out the Runner's Forum. It is designed to help you locate a partner or two to complete the relay. Just go to the Runner's Forum and sign in!

Timing and Scoring:
Timing and scoring will be done with ChampionChip Technology. Each runner or relay team must pick up his or her chip at the Thunder Road Expo on Friday. Runners who do not turn in their chips at the conclusion of their race will be assessed a $35 fee. (The event has the right to charge your credit card for this fee.)
Timing mats will be located at the Start, The Presbyterian Hospital 5K, Amica Insurance Half Marathon, 16.2 miles, 20 miles and the finish. Runners who do not register a split time at one of the checkpoints will be subject to disqualification.
Pit Stops
W ater and Powerade will be available at the following places along the course: Mile 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 23.5, and 25.
Gel will be provided at mile markers 16 and 20.
And perhaps for some, most importantly, portable restrooms will be stationed at the water stations, about every two miles along the course.

Pace Teams
Endurance Magazine Pace Teams
Charlotte’s Thunder Road Marathon will offer Endurance Magazine Pace Teams to help you run your best marathon! Pace Teams are available at the following times: 3:00, 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45, and 5:00.
Participating in a Pace Team is FREE and open to all runners. Endurance Magazine Pace Team leaders will run even splits to get you to the finish at your goal time. Simply sign up at the Thunder Road Marathon Endurance Magazine Pace Team booth at Health and Fitness Expo. On race day, go to the start area 15 - 25 minutes early to find your team and meet your Pace Team leaders.
If you begin to struggle . . .
Should you feel like you cannot finish or need assistance, there will be a sag wagon availble to assist you.
There will be trained medical personnel available to aid runners who need attention.

Time Limits
The marathon has a 6-hour time limit and the Amica Insurance Half Marathon has a 3 hour time limit. Runners who cannot maintain a 13:45 per mile pace will be asked to leave the course for their own safety.
Pit Stops will close and volunteers and police officers at intersections will not be available to participants who fall below the 13:45 per mile pace. This will be strictly enforced.
